Two 49ers Assistant Coaches Interview for Saints Vacant OC Job

For the Saints’ open OC position, two assistant coaches from the 49ers were interviewed.

This offseason, the 49ers coaching staff may lose a few more coaches. Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Saints reports that passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak and quarterbacks coach Brian Griese have both interviewed for the open offensive coordinator post. This implies that although the 49ers won’t lose both, one of them might depart soon. Since 2022, Griese has guided the quarterbacks for the 49ers, and he has had a significant role in Brock Purdy’s development. Kubiak has coached for the Vikings and Broncos before taking on the role of passing game coordinator for the 49ers for the first time this season. No coach has ever called a play before.

Still, it’s obvious why they’re in demand — they work under Kyle Shanahan. And with the exception of Mike LaFleur, all of Kyle Shanahan’s disciples have gone on to have success without him. We’re talking Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Bob Slowik and Mike McDaniel. The next effective offensive coordinator Shanahan has created might be Griese or Kubiak. I would assume that if a team hired 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks as head coach this offseason, he would bring Griese or Kubiak with him to handle offense. However, Wilks has interviews with the Chargers and the Falcons, so it doesn’t appear like he will be hired as head coach. Griese and Kubiak must determine how secure Dennis Allen’s job is as the head coach of the Saints. Because they will all lose their jobs if they join his staff and he is ousted within a year. Griese and Kubiak will likely be with the 49ers for another season, I would venture.
