Rangers: Lawrence Shankland transfer decision surely set in stone after Mohamed Diomande update today

Rangers: Following today’s Mohamed Diomande report, the decision to move Lawrence Shankland is unquestionably finalized.

The development of an update regarding Mohamed Diomande means that Rangers will undoubtedly have to postpone their pursuit of Hearts forward Lawrence Shankland.

Earlier this week, the Gers and FC Nordsjaelland came to an agreement on a deal for the midfield player, who was reportedly valued at a very modest £1.5 million.

The source that initially revealed the transfer news, B.T, however, revealed a much higher number in an update on Tuesday, January 23.

According to the Danish tabloid, Rangers would instead spend up to £4.5 million on Ivorian midfielder Diomande.

For a player who has played his whole four-year professional career in Denmark’s Superliga, that is a very significant investment.

Diomande appears to be a very gifted player, and it is hoped that he will strengthen the Gers midfield for many years to come.

Regarding the immediate effects of his arrival, the Rangers will most likely not go back and buy Shankland for the same price this month.

Exactly how much Hearts are seeking for Shankland is unknown, but it has been widely reported he is valued between £3.5m to £5m.

Shankland is out of contract at the end of next season, which forces Hearts’ hand somewhat, but he is still a proven goalscorer in this league.

Paying in excess of £4m is therefore not out of the question, but it seems unlikely those funds will be readily available in the January window.

After a large turnover of players last summer, the Gers were expected to tighten the purse strings during the winter period.

It would be shocking to spend nearly £10 million on two players after that, but it would also be a big testament to Philippe Clement’s talent.

The Gers’ decision to put the long term ahead of the short term during this window seems more logical.

It may not sit well with supporters who are demanding for a striker to join the team, but it wasn’t the worst decision taken.

The Gers are correct to move on and perhaps return to the negotiation table in the summer if Hearts are playing hardball.

For the time being, supporters should be pleased that we have acquired Diomande, a gifted player who might potentially have a greater influence than Shankland ever would.

In other Rangers news, Clement might soon need to make a difficult decision regarding a particular player.
