With a second wind at Ibrox, Rangers rookie Leon King intends to bully his way into Philippe Clement’s plans.
Last season, while Gio van Bronckhorst’s team was destroyed by Liverpool, Ajax, and Napoli, the teenager found himself caught in the center of a Champions League cyclone. The Scotland youth international took part in all six of those brutal group stage losses before his career was cut short in November 2022 by a grisly head clash at St Mirren.
However, after making three brief cameos as a substitute last month, he has gradually begun to reintegrate into Philippe Clement‘s plans as the new manager.
King is now prepared to play again after having candid conversations with the Belgian during the Gers’ winter training camp in Spain. “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind; it doesn’t feel like I’ve been with the first team for four years,” the 20-year-old stated.
“It seems like last week when I made my cup debut at 16 against Falkirk. At the age of 20, I have participated in thirty games for the team that I have always supported. It’s incredible, but I have to focus and push forward right now since this is just the beginning of my career and I want to make the most of it.
“At a very young age, I was undoubtedly thrust into those Champions League games, but I am thankful for those experiences. Only when we reach that point once more will it benefit me professionally.
However, it all depends on how you adjust to these circumstances. You won’t always play, but you will occasionally. Taking a chance when the opportunity arises is key.
“I had a very good conversation with the La Manga boss. Naturally, it’s challenging when a new manager takes over since you never know what to anticipate. You have no idea what the real plot is or even if you’ll be around to see it through.
But he treated me incredibly well. He told me he wants me to stay and fight for my place and he was straightforward and honest. I was happy to leave the discussion. He advised me to fight for my place here and to be patient. That is my plan of action.
It releases a great deal of pressure from your shoulders, allowing you to truly be yourself. Right now, I just need to focus on getting more appearances this season.
