Barry Ferguson reacts to Celtic transfer rumour, says ‘fans would go absolutely mental’
Barry Ferguson has made it clear that Celtic fans would ‘go absolutely mental’ if the club sold sought-after star Matt O’Riley during the January transfer window.
Sources have told HITC Football that a number of Premier League clubs Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham, West Ham United and Wolves are weighing up the option to buy the midfielder. Matt O’Riley has been one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership this season, scoring ten goals and supplying seven assists, with Brendan Rodgers’ side sitting top of the table. The 23-year-old did sign a new contract at the start of the campaign, so from that aspect, Celtic have his value intact and insurance. But what you can’t accommodate for, especially for teams in Scotland, is those in England’s top-flight throwing hard-to-turn-down money at players. And whilst Barry Ferguson expects Matt O’Riley to leave Parkhead one day, he made it clear that it would cause chaos if that call to accept an offer happened this month, as he told Go Radio.
Premier League interest in Matt O’Riley
“Honestly, I would be absolutely shocked if Celtic let him go,” said Ferguson. “He is far too important a player.“He has been one of the best players this season. I think, at some stage, he will go. There’s no doubt in my mind about that. (But now) I can’t see it happening.“I think the Celtic fans would go absolutely mental if he was allowed to go in this window.”
Matt O’Riley a Premier League player in the making
It has been a season of huge strides for the playmaker and one that signals why he is such a sought-after figure.Just look at O’Riley’s performances in the Champions League, three assists in six matches for a team that finished bottom of their group.Anything good that came from Celtic in Europe was via the boot of O’Riley. You would imagine those performances further proved to the interested parties that O’Riley is worth pushing for.
