Cowboys DC Dan Quinn set for HC interview with team that should be his favorite
Dan Quinn, the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, is expected to have his third head coaching interview of the week on Monday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Quinn is now a contender for half of the league’s head coach positions as Washington joins Seattle, Tennessee, and other teams on his roster. Quinn should find the most desirable position with his current division rival, Washington, out of all the teams he is contemplating.
Tennessee, meanwhile, may be the least attractive option.
Rookie quarterback Will Levis had his moments in 2023, but there is little reason to believe the Titans have the pieces in place now to improve their bottom-six scoring offense. Longtime Titans star running back Derrick Henry seems to be leaving and Tennessee’s leading receiver in 2023 was 31-year-old DeAndre Hopkins, who, despite his playmaking ability, is definitely on the downswing of his career arc.
Tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo was the only Titan to surpass 500 yards receiving, aside from Hopkins’ 1,057 yards.
Thanks to its offensive assets at wide receiver (DK Metcalf and Jaxson Smith-Njigba) and running back (Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet), Seattle ended 9-8 and is better positioned for instant success than Tennessee.
Due to his tenure as DC there from 2013 to 2014, Quinn has additional ties to the team. Although Geno Smith has proven to be a dependable and skilled quarterback, he is 33 years old, and his release in the 2024 summer might free up $13.8 million in contract space for Seattle. This leaves the position unsettled.
By staying out of Seattle and the NFC West, he would avoid playing two games a season against the San Francisco 49ers, a team his defense has struggled against in Dallas.
Quinn would be able to choose a rookie quarterback who could change the fortunes of the organization and have the chance to groom him from the start of his career in Washington. Additionally, he would be free to either surround that quarterback with other outstanding prospects or trade some picks for players who could start right away.
He would be facing head coaches from the NFC East: Brian Daboll of New York, Mike McCarthy of Dallas, and Nick Sirianni of Philadelphia.
If the Commanders extend an offer to Quinn, Washington appears to be the greatest fit for him given his experience with the best offenses in the division and the potential haul available in the 2024 NFL Draft.
