Cowboys have to extend Dak Prescott or fail to sign other key players to long-term contracts.

It was confirmed earlier this week by the Dallas Cowboys that head coach Mike McCarthy will remain in Dallas for a minimum of one more season.

McCarthy, who is currently in the final year of his contract with the team, spoke with the media and took questions during a press conference earlier this week.

During the news conference, McCarthy did not waste any time in endorsing his starting quarterback, Dak Prescott, who will come with a $59.4 million cap hit in 2024.

Ahead of a sudden decline in health, the Dallas Cowboys make a risky decision about their quarterback.

Although Prescott’s poor performance in the NFC Wild Card loss has already been discussed and assessed extensively, his regular season play cannot be

forgotten. Prescott led the league in touchdowns with 36 in 2023, throwing for 4,516 yards with only nine interceptions.

He was a major player in the MVP race for the majority of the second half of the season.

In 2022, Prescott’s deal was restructured by the Cowboys, who turned $18.4 million of his salary into bonuses, freeing them $14.72 million in cap space.

The front office reorganized Prescott once again in 2023 in order to create further cap space. Prescott’s 2023 cap amount is now little over $26 million as a result of the change.

Prescott has a no trade clause in his contract, which many who want to trade for him or let him go forget.

Dak also has a no tag clause in his contract, so for anyone arguing that the front office should finish out this year then tag him for next, think again.

Before the season begins, the Cowboys will most likely try to sign Dak to another extension.

The organization will be able to use the estimated $26.2 million that the agreement will free up to sign other important players to contracts.

The future contracts of all the other players, including Micah Parsons, DaRon Bland, and CeeDee Lamb, depend on Dak’s contract renewal.

Dak’s extension becomes even more important if they intend to keep a handful of players whose contracts are about to expire for the following season.
