MLB Fans React As Houston Astros Sign Star Closer Josh Hader To 5 Year $95,000,000 Contract

Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports that Hader will be able to collect $19 million from 2024–2028 as a result of the transaction, which also includes a full no-trade provision.

Following a stellar season with the San Diego Padres, Hader accepted a qualifying offer from the Padres and then signed a long-term contract with the Astros. He was guaranteed $20.3 million should the one-year tender be accepted, though there didn’t seem to be much chance of that happening.

The Astros, who have won the American League Championship Series seven times in a row, will now get Hader on a long-term contract. With an 82-80 record with a lineup that ranked 13th in MLB in runs scored and 15th in slugging percentage, San Diego took third place in the NL West.

In order to win another World Series, the Astros will be looking to Hader to dominate their bullpen in the upcoming 2024 campaign.

The Astros bullpen appears to be lacking a significant closer in 2023, while Ryan Pressly filled the role admirably in 2022, recording 31 saves, a 3.58 ERA, and 74 strikeouts in 65.1 innings. Hader’s contract, according to ESPN’s Passan, has no deferrals, making it the biggest contract ever for a bullpen pitcher with a $95 million present-day value.

The New York Mets and Edwin Diaz inked a five-year, $102 million contract last summer, but $26.5 million of that amount was delayed, making the pact only worth $93 million now.
