Eddie Howe could sell Newcastle United star Sean Longstaff after Everton transfer pursuit, £31m update detailed.

Two years ago, Everton was rumored to have made an offer for the English midfielder, but it was reportedly rejected at the time.Since then, both Manchester United’s and that desire have waned, but it looks like Newcastle is now more inclined to let go of Longstaff.

“[Eddie] Howe is adamant Longstaff has a “long-term future” at Newcastle and the midfielder has made 18 Premier League appearances this season, but academy products are valuable in PSR terms as any fee received can be recorded as “pure profit” given there was no initial outlay,” according to a Chris Waugh article for The Athletic [17 January], in which the 26-year-old is valued at £31 million.

“Longstaff is English, still only 26 years old, and has had interest from Manchester United and Everton in the past, despite not having received any caps. Although Howe would prefer to keep Longstaff, it might be hard to decline a sizable offer. Although Everton had previously expressed a strong interest in Longstaff—so much so that an offer was made—many things have changed since then.

The Newcastle midfielder would still do a job in the Toffees’ engine room, but that is not exactly an area we are weak right now. James Garner has stepped up this season, while Idrissa Gueye and Amadou Onana are Sean Dyche’s other options in that department.

Despite the fact that Longstaff’s contract expires at the conclusion of the following season, this does not even begin to address Newcastle’s alleged appraisal of him. Everton is not in a position to spend more than £30 million at this time, much less on a player they do not truly need.

Without a doubt, Longstaff may find employment at a Premier League team outside of St. James’ Park, but it won’t be on Merseyside. In other Everton news, a financial expert believes the Toffees could be facing a third PSR sanction.
