The Dallas Cowboys have chosen to stay with their current head coach,
despite a number of recent head coaching changes in the NFL and the quantity of well-known coaches still available.
Despite an ugly first-round playoff loss to his former team last weekend,
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said on Wednesday that head coach Mike McCarthy will be back for the
2024 campaign.
“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward
for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” Jones said in a press release.
“There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership.”
McCarthy was hired by the Cowboys in 2020 with the express purpose of assisting
Dallas in overcoming a bad postseason run and returning to the Super Bowl.
In the previous four years, they still haven’t.
The Cowboys’ season came to an untimely end on Sunday when they fell 48-32 at home in the semifinals
to the Green Bay Packers.
With the loss under McCarthy, Dallas became the first club in NFL history to finish with three straight
12-win seasons and yet lose out on the conference title game.
The Cowboys haven’t gone as far as they have in almost 25 years.
Even worse, the Packers have now won three postseason games at AT&T Stadium compared to the
Cowboys’ two at home.
The only No. 2 seed to ever fall to a No. 7 seed is Dallas.
