The Saints getting too old? A matter of increasing concern among fans was addressed by Mickey Loomis.

The New Orleans Saints have the oldest roster in the NFL based on a single metric.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell releases his snap-weighted age rating every year.

which is based on the average age of a squad, as reported by players who saw frequent action.

And the Saints prevailed for the second year in a row. This season, the Saints’ average age was 28.2 years

old.

As far as Barnwell was concerned, New Orleans had the oldest offense and the second-oldest defense in t

he league.

Mickey Loomis, the general manager of the Saints, didn’t appear to mind, though.

At his season-ending press conference, Loomis showed no signs of weakness despite the age of New

Orleans’ roster.

“No, listen, I see some of those stats sometimes and I think, look, you got to look past whatever the raw

number is and look at the core of your team,” said Loomis. And hey, a couple guys might have distorted

that. Since our club is experienced, I don’t think about that. Well, I don’t.

With key players like Derek Carr, Cam Jordan, Demario Davis, and Taysom Hill in their early to mid-

30s, the Saints certainly have an ageing roster. While some of them are having successful seasons—Davis

was selected to the second team of the All-Pro team—others seem to be struggling. In 2023, Jordan and

the elderly (28 years old) Alvin Kamara had possibly the worst years of their careers.

Loomis commented, “Cam Jordan was productive for more than half of the season despite basically

playing on one leg due to a high-ankle sprain.” “Age is just a number. The performance is very

important. Additionally, I appreciate a few of these young men who came by themselves. Carl

Granderson, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor. I am able to list numerous players.

Loomis said that the oldest and youngest teams usually have a 12- to 13-month gap, however he was not

aware of Barnwell’s most recent ranking. In this case, however, there was a 2½ year age difference

between the Saints and the youngest team, the Green Bay Packers (25.7).

Loomis stated, “It’s not like we have two teams, one with a lot of players who are 35 years old and the

other with a lot of players who are 23 years old.”
