The failure of talks between Josh Doig and Marseille a few days ago seemed to have given Philippe

Clement’s team a second chance. If, however, a breakdown in talks with the Ligue 1 powerhouses gave

Rangers a chance, Sassuolo appears prepared to close that door permanently before throwing away the

key.

Doig, Tuttomercatoweb report, is now ‘about to move to Sassuolo’ for an initial fee of just over £5

million.

The Edinburgh-born defender, who started his career at Hearts before making his name at capital city

rivals Hibs, became another Scottish starlet to up sticks and head for Italy in the summer of 2022 and,

like Lewis Ferguson and Liam Henderson, he has done his reputation no harm in mainland Europe.

Doig has been a bright spot for relegation-threatened Hellas throughout a challenging season, much like

Cyril Ngonge, who is connected to Aston Villa. The departure of both players—Doig heading to Sassuolo

and Ngonge getting closer to Scudetto winners Napoli—will be a serious blow to Hellas’ chances of

surviving.
