With a £5 million deal now on the horizon, Rangers lose out on another January target.

Josh Doig, a former Hibernian left back, is likely to finalize a £5 million move to Serie A opponent Sassuolo today, meaning Rangers may officially lose out on him.

After negotiations between Josh Doig and Marseille broke down a few days ago, Philippe Clement’s side seemed to have been given another chance. If, however, a breakdown in talks with the Ligue 1 powerhouses gave Rangers a chance, Sassuolo appears prepared to close that door permanently before throwing away the key.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Doig is “about to move to Sassuolo” for a one-time payment of somewhat more than £5 million.

Like Lewis Ferguson and Liam Henderson, the Edinburgh-born defender, who began his career at Hearts before earning his mark at capital city rivals Hibs, was another Scottish talent to pick sticks and move for continental Europe in the summer of 2022. He has done nothing but good for his reputation there.

Josh Doig leaves the Rangers for Sassuolo

Doig – like the Aston Villa-linked Cyril Ngonge – has been a bright spark in a difficult season for relegation-threatened Hellas. The departure of both players will be a major blow to Hellas’ survival hopes, Doig on his way to Sassuolo and Ngonge edging closer to Scudetto holders Napoli.

With Ridvan Yilmaz maybe on his way out of Glasgow, Rangers are scouring the market for a number of potential replacements. Finding one, however, is proving to be easier said than done.

The left-back quest continues.

Kai Wagner just extended his contract with Philadelphia Union, an MLS team. The £12 million benchwarmer for Benfica, David Jurasek, is currently traveling with Hoffenheim to the Bundesliga. A bid for former Dundee loanee Owen Beck was also rejected by Liverpool due to worries about Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas’s fitness.

Another possibility is Bristol City’s Cameron Pring. But following Pringle’s “immense” performance in Tuesday’s FA Cup victory against West Ham United, the play-off-chasing Robins are very unlikely to entertain bids.
