Why the Saints should sign OG Greg Van Roten

The reasons for signing OG Greg Van Roten by the Saints.

For the third year in a row, the New Orleans Saints have failed to qualify for the playoffs. The offensive line performance of the Saints this season was a major contributing factor in their struggles. The Saints gave up a lot of pressure and had trouble protecting quarterback Derek Carr. The Saints will need to deal head-on with the big boys if they hope to end this playoff drought. Here’s where Greg Van Roten, the original, may make a difference.

The rationale behind signing Greg Van Roten

The 33-year-old had a career resurgence year suiting up for the black and silver. After only starting four games last year for the Buffalo Bills, Van Roten played all 17 games this season and played extremely well.

Van Roten excelled in pass-blocking snaps. He earned a 77.4 PFF pass-blocking grade, which ranked 12th among all OGs in the NFL. No player on the Saints earned a pass-blocking grade above 75.

The 2016 playoff matchup between the Cowboys and Green Bay

Over the past 20 years, the Dallas Cowboys have had some awful postseason luck for such a storied NFL team. Dallas was unable to escape penalties for erroneous snaps, subpar quarterback play, and contentious coaching decisions. Even as the 2016 season approaches, the Cowboys’ fortunes eventually

Van Roten is a desirable choice in part because signing him probably won’t break the bank. Teams won’t be eager to offer him a big multi-year deal because he is an older player. The Saints find this very appealing, and they will probably be short on funds this offseason.
