Reggie Bush Reveals The Retroactively Idiotic Reason The Texans Didn’t Draft Him

The Texans didn’t draft Reggie Bush, and he reveals the retroactively stupid reason why.

In 2006, the New Orleans Saints selected Reggie Bush with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft after the Texans passed on the chance to secure the talents of the running back—a decision Houston apparently made due to some retroactively poor advice.

Considering what he accomplished at the University of Southern California, Reggie Bush appeared to have everything necessary to be selected first overall in the draft.

With the Trojans, the running back won two national titles and was named the Heisman Trophy winner for his outstanding play in his senior year at USC. However, the scandal surrounding gifts he and his family received from an agent during their time in college caused him to eventually forfeit the trophy.

The Houston Texans ultimately decided to scoop up defensive end Mario Williams with the first pick, which was a fairly surprising development at the time (although it didn’t turn out to be a terrible move based on what he was able to achieve in his five seasons with the franchise).

The New Orleans Saints didn’t really have to think too hard about drafting Bush with the next pick, and now, we have some insight into why he didn’t end up suiting up for the Texans courtesy of the man himself.

On Tuesday, the retired RB stopped by The Dan Patrick Show to reflect on what transpired prior to the NFL Draft that year while revealing why Houston ultimately opted to go in a different direction.

“You’re curious about the reality? It’s Charley Casserly, the truth. He has not discussed it. When I worked for NFL Network, we actually had the chance to talk about it since one of the executives learned the truth.

It seems that the reason for this was that, after they employed a private investigator to look into me during the Heisman Trophy scandal, the investigator concluded that I was a nasty man, had a poor moral code, was a street child, and that they shouldn’t sign me.

Bush continued In the end, the former Texans general manager chose to decline the request from NFL Network to have a talk with him about that choice.

Although Houston’s decision wasn’t entirely devastating, the private investigator clearly made a mistake in his evaluation.

However, Bush—who moved to New Orleans the same year as Drew Brees—was a big part of the Saints’ ability to turn things around and win Super Bowl XLIV, so they more than capitalized on the opportunity.
