Phil McNulty shares ‘trauma on a loop’ Everton verdict after new charge, ‘deja vu’ for Sean Dyche

After Sean Dyche’s new charge and Everton’s verdict, Phil McNulty talks about “trauma on a loop” and “deja vu.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche is experiencing “deja vu” following the team’s alleged financial rule violations in the Premier League.

Phil McNulty, chief football writer for BBC Sport, claims that the Toffees are currently experiencing “trauma on a loop.”

“However, this is another unwelcome distraction and a feeling of déjà vu for manager Sean Dyche. Everton are currently in the process of appealing against the first sanction and, in an echo of that charge, made it immediately clear they will be defending their position robustly once more,” McNulty wrote for BBC Sport on January 15.

“The club hopes to at least have the 10-point punishment reduced, but this latest development is just one more twist in a season that has been nearly entirely traumatizing.”

For Everton, who may have believed their problems with financial rule violations were over with their 10-point deduction earlier in the season, this is truly a nightmarish scenario.

It remains to be seen what will happen with the latest verdict and indeed the prior one given how the Toffees are currently appealing it.

But one thing is for sure: Dyche, who just wants to concentrate on football-related matters, will be extremely irritated and disturbed by these behind-the-scenes problems.

The Toffees had a fantastic comeback from their 10-point deduction, defeating teams like Chelsea and Newcastle United to get back up the standings.

However, the Toffees’ recent struggles have been undone; after three losses and a draw from their previous four games, they currently sit 17th in the league table.

There is now a diversion from Premier League activity with FA Cup action taking place at Goodison Park on Wednesday, December 17, as Everton takes on Crystal Palace in a third-round replay.
