Match Ratings: Borussia Dortmund Wins, Maatsen Makes His Debut, and Sancho Returns!
On his return to BVB, Adon Sancho lights a fire that propels them to a 3-0 victory over Darmstadt.
A victory over bottom-seeded Darmstadt at the Merck-Stadion was the only outcome that would do. The
only changes made by Edin Terzic were the return of Nico Schlotterbeck to central defense, which
allowed Ian Maatsen, a Chelsea loanee, to start at left-back, and Marcel Sabitzer in place of the injured
Mats Hummels, with Emre Can moving to center-back. Edin Terzic stuck with the same starting lineup
that began both of the friendlies in Marbella.
Dortmund’s careless, haphazard possession was evident throughout the game’s opening hour, and they
were only ahead at the half because of a brilliant solo effort from Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, which allowed
Julian Brandt to score a lovely finish. But that incredible moment was an exception, as shortly after the
interval, Terzic substituted Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus for JBG and Brandt after deciding he had had
enough.
The changes made a big difference right away, as BVB started to generate more opportunities and hold
onto the ball much better. Eventually, they doubled their lead when prodigal son Sancho found Reus
with a precise pass to tap in from around a yard away after Donyell Malen sent a superb pass in to the
inside-right channel. As the tide continued to shift against our struggling hosts, more substitutes were
sent on, and Youssoufa Moukoko put the cherry on top with a delicious goal after some clever play
between him and Sabitzer.
