A striker who lit up the Championship the previous season and took home the coveted Four Four Two

EFL Player of the Year award is the target of Chelsea’s tantalizing bid.

This season, Mauricio Pochettino’s team has struggled to score goals consistently; Nicolas Jackson has

managed seven, although three of those came against a nine-man Tottenham Hotspur team in a single

game.

In order to move up the table and into European spots at the end of the current season, Chelsea’s

management is consequently determined to bring in an elite goal scorer in January. The Blues don’t

appear to have had much luck in the market thus far, though.

Portuguese publication According to the Record, Chelsea’s £73 million offer for Victor Gyokeres, a

striker for Sporting Lisbon, was turned down.

Gyokeres only paid £20 million to join the Liga Portugal team in the summer, but Chelsea has been so

impressed with his goal-scoring ability that they have made him their top target for the January transfer

window.

Gyokeres, formerly of Coventry City, won Four Four Two’s Player of the EFL for the 2022–2023 season

after scoring 21 goals in the Championship the previous year. His presence befits a striker from the

1990s, and he can score any style of goal, from touch-and-hit finishes to solo runs slamming through

defenses.

As Sporting leads the standings, the Swede has also had a great start to life in Lisbon, scoring 11 goals in

just 16 games. Gyokeres’ contract expires in2028, but Sporting is not in a hurry to let their striker go.

Instead, it appears that if Chelsea wants to sign him to a contract worth £87 million by January, they will

need to match his release clause. Given the dearth of good strikers available on the transfer market, the

Blues may be persuaded to make another approach for Gyokeres while the misfiring Nicolas Jackson is

away at AFCON.

However, the Daily Mail says that Chelsea hasn’t formally approached Sporting despite the Portuguese

story because the associated costs are just too exorbitant.
