Cowboys as Belichick ‘Mystery’ Hire Landing Spot? What Just Changed.

Even if the Dallas Cowboys weren’t ESPN’s much-discussed “mystery team” before Sunday’s 48-32 playoff loss to Green Bay, they most

likely are now after hiring Bill Belichick.

It is our belief that FOBs, or “Friends of Bill,” have been fueling a story for the past few months that has the potential to become true, if not actuality.

The idea that the sacked Patriots owner would be hired to replace the fired Mike McCarthy did not come from within The Star.

We have said all along, and will direct-quote our own selves: In a “never-say-never” football world, it is conceivable that McCarthy’s playoff

performance might be so heinous, and Belichick’s siren call be so powerful, that owner Jerry Jones is moved to make a chance. And here we area heinous loss. A siren call.

Was this once nothing more than a sycophantic message spread around the NFL by Belichick media puppets in order to make the recently-failing legend seem all the more attractive?

That’s our opinion. Is it suddenly something that team owner Jerry Jones needs to think about, along with suggestions like meeting with Mike Vrabel, Jim Harbaugh, and every promising new coach?

Jerry mentioned that he hadn’t considered any of it as of yet, far into the chilly night here at AT&T Stadium. And yet another of “our

takes,” after 34 years of knowing and covering Jones, is that he is lying.

Approximately when the scoreboard at home read “Packers 27, Cowboys 0,” his 81-year-old fertile imagination briefly shifted to “the next.

” And contemplating “siren calls” and all possibilities after “heinous”? It is not a “mystery.”
