FORT WORTH No private jet will touch down at Teterboro Airport, and Chris Mortensen won’t have to

mediate a deal between the Dallas Cowboys’ owner and the former New England Patriots coach.

Anyone who follows, coaches, or participates in the NFL has come to accept the following because it’s

Jerry Jones: The sun rising in the south should never be discounted.

That includes Jerry pulling a surprise move in early January 2002 by hiring Bill Parcells, the head coach

of the New York Giants, New York Jets, and New England Patriots.

The Cowboys had just finished three straight 5-11 seasons without making the playoffs.

The Cowboys have now finished three straight 12-5 seasons.

In 2024, much as under Dave Campo in 2001, we’re still wondering if Jerry will fire his coach, Mike

McCarthy.

Even if the Cowboys bomb in the wild-card round and lose at home against the Green Bay Packers today

at AT&T Stadium, it’s hard to picture Jerry firing Mikey-Mike. However, perhaps Jerry is saying it’s time

after three straight postseason seasons without making it to the conference championship game.

Jerry has the same likelihood of firing Mike as giving him a 50-year contract extension.

However, Nick Saban has announced his retirement. It is anticipated that Jim Harbaugh will rejoin the

NFL. Pete Carroll resigned as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. And here’s your chance to hire the

best pro football coach ever.

You have to at least do your homework when Bill Belichick is available. You will discover after doing

your study that Belichick will not lead the Dallas Cowboys as head coach.

Jerry has been down this road before and is unlikely to do it again. Not for a Belichick, anyhow.

Jerry’s mentor is one of the Belichick types he’s dealt with in the past.

Although Jerry’s four years as head coach under Bill Parcells did see the effective reconstruction of what

had been a dismal roster, the experience wasn’t very enjoyable and there were no postseason victories.

Bill connected winning football games to a trip to the proctologist, while Jerry just wants to have fun. Parcells was the most sad person to have won a football game.

All he wanted was to escape the pain of losing at all costs; he was not motivated by the thrill of success but by the cycle of expectation that winning creates.

His former assistant coach referred to Bill as a “failed human being,” or “FHB.” (sorry); though I thought

Parcells was a great teacher and guy, he was definitely not for everyone.

As a protégé of Parcells, Belichick fits the definition of “fun” like your finger does in an electrical outlet.

If Belichick wants to stay a head coach in the NFL at his age (71), he will demand personnel control.

Bill essentially possessed that kind of influence, albeit occasionally it necessitated some “negotiating”

between him and Jerry.

Jerry would cheerfully tell anyone with one functioning ear, following Bill’s retirement after the 2006

season, that by employing Parcells, he showed to the universe that he could do it “another way.” It meant

he demonstrated his ability to cede power.

The Cowboys’ approach to building their roster has been a strength ever since they elevated Will McClay

to the post of vice president of player personnel in 2014. Without the title, McClay functions as the

general manager in essence.

Ownership of the title “Dallas Cowboys general manager” is claimed.

With a Bill Belichick, how any of this would work just doesn’t seem possible.

Given that there isn’t a better salesperson in this or any other lifetime, it seems possible that Jerry could

convince anyone that it can work. A snow salesman might buy from the man.

Jerry does have a hand to play that will tempt Bill Belichick if, for some reason, he decides he wants to

pursue the coach.

The Dallas Cowboys are like “playing the big room” in Las Vegas, as Parcells famously remarked of them.

Being a native New Yorker, Bill didn’t really enjoy living in this area, but he did appreciate the

opportunity to coach the league’s most prominent team.

Being the head coach of the Cowboys is more like receiving a bag of 50-karat gold bars than a carrot for a

coach with an ego, and they all have one.

He had already traveled this path with another Bill, and although he showed he could handle it, it wasn’t

a great fit since it wasn’t all that enjoyable.
