Rookie Scores 34-points as the Pelicans beat the Dallas Mavericks 118-108

The majority of both teams’ regular starters were not in uniform as the Pelicans defeated the Dallas Mavericks 118-108 on Saturday night. Rookie Jordan Hawkins scored a season-high 34 points.

After falling short at Denver 125-113 on Friday night, Herb Jones scored 15 points, while Jonas Valanciunas recorded 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Pelicans, who split a back-to-back.

With 33 points, Kyrie Irving led the Mavericks, followed by Derrick Jones Jr. and Tim Hardaway Jr. with 24 apiece.

The Pelicans outscored the Mavericks 39-27 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead. They had previously made 4 of 14 3-pointers in the first half.

Due to an ankle sprain, Luka Doncic of Dallas missed his second straight game for the first time this season. For Dallas, youngster Dereck Lively II (ankle) missed his fifth straight game while Dante Exum (plantar fascia) missed his sixth.

Zion Williamson (rest), Brandon Ingram (Achilles), and CJ McCollum (ankle) were not available for the Pelicans to play. Williamson was left out for the fourth time in the six Pelicans back-to-back finales this season.

Two-thirds of the Pelicans’ season scoring was absent due to the injury of top reserve Trey Murphy III’s knee.

Irving and Hardaway, who combined for 76 points in Dallas’ 128-124 victory over New York on Thursday despite shooting a collective 2 of 14 and missing all seven 3-pointers, gave the Pelicans a 29-20 lead after one quarter.

Before the Mavericks went on a 12-point run, New Orleans led by a game-high 11 points one minute into the second quarter and led 46-37 with 4 1/2 minutes remaining in the half.

At the half, Dallas was up 54–49 thanks to 13 points apiece from Hardaway, Jones, and Irving. With 14, Hawkins was New Orleans’ only player to score in double figures in the first half.
