Two New Orleans Saints were selected for the All-Pro Teams, which are now available. While one is in the Pro Bowl, the other ought to have made more appearances while he was a member of the Saints.
The season awards are the focus of conversation during downtime in between games as the 2023 NFL playoffs get underway. The Associated Press revealed their 2023 first and second-team All-Pro lineups prior to the actual awards ceremony. It’s the logical next step, as the Pro Bowl rosters have already been revealed. It’s a bit of a pleasant surprise considering how the Saints season played in 2023 that two players from New Orleans, one from each roster, made the cut.
Pro Bowl selection for the Saints in 2023, Rashid Shaheed, was made based only on his status as a “return specialist.” Shaheed, the punt returner for the Saints, was the only first-team All-Pro selection made because of his performance in the punt return game. For those keeping score at home, Keisean Nixon of the Green Bay Packers is the kick returner. This whole situation came full circle with Shaheed’s punt return house call in Lambeau Field, which is undoubtedly a major factor in the nod.
As for the player named to the second-team, he needs little introduction. That man is linebacker Demario Davis, already a Saints legend, and progressively approaching NFL legend status.
In 2019, Davis was selected to the first team of the All-Pro team; going back to 2020, this season marks his fourth straight nomination to the second team. As a result, Davis joins the ranks of Jahri Evans, a finalist for the Hall of Fame class this year, Drew Brees, who has a space reserved for him in Canton, Rickey Jackson, Morten Andersen, and Willie Roaf as the sixth Saints player to be named to five or more All-Pro teams. Those three of course already in the Hall of Fame.
While it’s unclear if Demario Davis will wind up as a bust in Canton, considering those other legendary New Orleans Saints players, it does start to raise some questions. We’re delighted that they both deserve their bouquets, as does Rashid Shaheed.
