That’s peculiar’: Sean Dyche puzzled by Everton’s lack of penalties this season

Sean Dyche is perplexed by Everton’s lack of penalties this season, saying “that’s peculiar.”

Sean Dyche has expressed his strange and concerning views on Everton’s lack of penalties this season, citing other clubs’ “tiny touches” as the reason.

Everton is the only Premier League team, along with Brighton, Fulham, Tottenham, and Wolves, to have not received a spot kick this season. They have also let up the joint-highest amount of goals, five. For Everton, in the last 73 games, there has only been one penalty.

When Joachim Andersen held Beto in the last seconds of the FA Cup third-round match against Crystal Palace, and when Amadou Onana was pulled from his shirt, Dyche feels certain that his team should have been awarded a penalty.

“If you get to this stage of a season and you’ve not had a penalty, that’s peculiar,” said the Everton manager. “Some that went against us can be debated. The one on Onana at Tottenham almost got brushed away like it was nothing. If you are going to start freeze-framing everything, you can freeze-frame that and see it’s a penalty.

“Seeing how many punishments are handed for minor infractions that we occasionally can’t figure out is really concerning. While some refer to it as the “modern game,” I find it concerning how many penalties are meted out for essentially insignificant offenses. Men who are extremely strong, fit, nimble, and well-balanced suddenly seem to stumble and lose their footing. You wouldn’t do it if you were strolling down the street. Nevertheless, that contradicts the statistics that show we haven’t experienced a penalty if that is the general rule. We’ll have to wait and see if things even out in the second half of the campaign.

Arnaut Danjuma, Jarrad Branthwaite, Ben Godfrey, and Onana are among the Everton players reported to leaving in January, but Dyche maintains he has no intention of undermining the team. “At this point, there won’t be anyone we’re considering letting go of,” he declared. To be clear, those are recognized first-team players. However, some of the younger players have alternative loan situations. We want everyone in the house at this time, but anything can happen in the market with shifting sands, so you never know.

On Monday, Everton is expected to find out if they will face charges from the Premier League for yet another infraction of their profit and sustainability policies. The club is appealing against the 10-point deduction for a £19.5m overspend in 2021-22, the outcome of which may effect the assessment of its finances for the three-year period up to 2023. Dyche claimed he hasn’t heard anything from the team on Monday’s potential decision. “I have received documents, but they won’t reach me until the decision is made and the public is informed,” he stated.
