Rangers use Ridvan Yilmaz in leverage attempt as six-team bidding war breaks out for Josh Doig

Rangers have sought to obtain “leverage” in the race for Hellas Verona defender Josh Doig by seeking to transfer Ridvan Yilmaz in the other direction. That’s according to TEAMtalk, which said on Friday, January 12, on its website that Doig is being considered by a number of other clubs.

According to TEAMtalk, teams interested in signing the 21-year-old left-back, who has made 13 appearances for Hellas Verona this season, including Leeds United, Marseille, Sassuolo, Atalanta, and Torino.

“Rangers, Leeds United and Marseille are all in a battle to try and sign Hellas Verona full-back Josh Doig in the January transfer window, sources have told TEAMtalk. Sources state that the Scottish club are in the running but face a battle from competitors.

“The Verona defender is likely to move in this window according to those close to the player and will be replaced by Rangers defender Ridvan Yilmaz who is close to joining up in Italy with his new side. Rangers have tried to get leverage in the race for Doig by sending Yilmaz to Verona.”

Doig is certainly a top talent, and Rangers would be foolish not to at least try and bring him to Ibrox as soon as possible.

The uncertain futures of fellow full-backs Borna Barisic and Ridvan Yilmaz should provide Philippe Clement with further incentive to snap up the youngster from Hellas Verona.

However, it appears that a number of teams are interested in hiring Doig, who has been enjoying his time in Italy since leaving Hibernian.

Doig has a promising future in the game, both with clubs and the national team, but it’s still unclear where he will wind up next. Given his apparent availability, the full back will undoubtedly make headlines this month, but the Gers are in for a serious fight.

Although the team is presently on winter break, the influential people at Ibrox should still be working hard to get significant agreements completed.
