Carla Ward shares ‘absolutely imperative’ Aston Villa Women January transfer admission
Aston Villa Women must “absolutely imperatively” sign a new center-back during the current January transfer window. Manager Carla Ward said that the Midlands club is “actively” looking for a player to fill that role. Currently on winter break, Aston Villa Women are eighth in the Women’s Super League (WSL) standings.
According to Sky Sports, Ward stated, “We had seven defenders for four positions; we’re now down to five for four.” We have to get a center-half during this window, in my opinion.
We are currently actively searching for it. We absolutely need to work to overcome this obstacle because we don’t want to be starting the second half of the season with a five-for-four record.
Ward is obviously unhappy with her present choices and is keen on finding a new central defender. And given that Aston Villa Women haven’t played at their best at the back this season, that makes sense.
In the current WSL season, they have given up 22 goals, with only bottom-feeding Bristol City giving up 26 goals. Despite Ward’s team winning their past two games, the poor defensive performances have had a significant impact on an otherwise disastrous season.
A 5-1 FA WSL Cup win over Durham Women in mid-December was followed by a 1-0 WSL win over Brighton Women before the winter break. The Midlands club get their league campaign back underway against Leicester City Women next Friday (19 January) but must first get past Everton Women in the FA Women’s Cup on Saturday (13 January).
Given that a replacement central defender is probably not going to arrive before then, Ward and her team will be put to the test severely in that fourth-round match.
