Cleveland or Houston for sports supremacy? Comparing history across NFL, MLB, NBA

Houston versus Cleveland. Space City versus The Land. And the NFL Wild Card game between the Browns and Texans this weekend will be the first postseason encounter between the two teams. But let’s look more closely at the history between the NFL, MLB, and NBA franchises in Cleveland and Houston in addition to the Browns and Texans.

The NFL score between the Browns and Texans is 7-7. In other news, the Browns have a record of 30-22 against the former Houston Oilers, who relocated to Tennessee in 1997 and competed there for two seasons before changing their name to the Titans in 1999.

In MLB, the Guardians hold a 44-45 all-time record against the Houston Astros, including an 0-3 record in the postseason when they were swept in the best-of-five 2018 American League Division Series.

The NBA, however, is where Houston has dominated the series history against Cleveland. The Cavaliers are just 51-88 (.367 winning percentage) against the Rockets all-time, the franchise’s second-worst record against any NBA opponent (San Antonio Spurs, 38-66, .365)

And now, a deeper dive into the history of Cleveland vs. Houston sports teams: Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans all-time record: 7-7 (0-0 in postseason)

· First matchup: Oct. 20, 2002, at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns defeated the Texans, 34-17, in the franchise’s first year of existence. The Browns were led by quarterback Tim Couch, who completed 21 of 31 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown. Running backs Jamel White and William Green each recorded 12 rushes for 65 yards and 24 yards, respectively, as well as one touchdown each.

· Most recent matchup: Only a few weeks ago on Christmas Eve 2023 in Houston, the Browns upset the Texans 36-22. Joe Flacco, the quarterback, completed 27 of 42 passes for 368 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. With 11 catches for a franchise-high 265 receiving yards and two touchdowns, wide receiver Amari Cooper had a spectacular day to help the Browns defeat the Texans, who were without standout rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud.

· Playoff history: The Browns and Texans have never played each other in the postseason. Saturday’s Wild Card round playoff game in Houston will mark the first playoff matchup between the two franchises. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Eastern at NRG Stadium in Houston.

· Scoring margin: In 14 games played, the Texans have outscored the Browns by a narrow margin of 276-264, or an average score of 19.7 to 18.9 per game.

· Super Bowl seekers: There are 12 NFL teams that have never won a Super Bowl, including the Browns and Texans. The teams that make up the other groups are the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings, and Arizona Cardinals. In addition, the Browns and Texans, along with the Jaguars and Lions, are two of the four NFL clubs that have never participated in a Super Bowl.
