Rangers attacker Sam Lammers set to join Dutch side Utrecht on loan

A loan deal until the end of the season has been agreed for the Dutch forward.

Sam Lammers is set to leave Rangers to join Utrecht on loan within the next 48 hours, STV understands.

The Dutch forward, who hasn’t left a lasting impact at Ibrox, is set to spend the rest of the season returning home.

Lammers struggled to produce goals or steady performances even though he was a regular in the team when he was signed by former Rangers manager Michael Beale as part of a squad overhaul.

Though it’s known there is no definite option for Utrecht to buy Lammers at the end of the loan, the attacker, who has scored twice in 31

appearances in light blue, has had more limited game time under new boss Philippe Clement. With that said, the forward now has the opportunity to reset at another club.

Lammers signed a four-year deal with the Ibrox side after a £3.5m transfer was agreed with Atalanta in June.

At the time, Beale claimed to have signed a player he had been following for years and who would give the Rangers offence genuine talent.

The former Rangers manager declared in June that “Sam will give us great technical and tactical quality, being able to play in a

variety of attacking positions as a number ten or nine.” “I had a long conversation with him during our planning meeting for the

upcoming season, and it became evident that we have similar views on football and his future personal growth. He was the first player I spoke with

in this regard.

“He has a strong alignment to the other players in our squad.”

Prior to moving to Italy in 2020, Lammers made an impression while on loan at Heerenveen after starting his career at PSV Eindhovern.

After that, he had loan stints with Empoli and Sampdoria before moving to Scotland, where he assisted Eintracht Frankfurt in their run to the

Europa League championship.
