Houston Astros Are Leading Candidates to Host World Baseball Classic

Leading contenders to host the 2026 World Baseball Classic are the Houston Astros.

The World Baseball Classic is still something that the Houston Astros would like to host. The Astros stand to gain financially from this, even though it would be a fantastic opportunity for baseball fans to go to Texas and attend games.

Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reported the interest in Houston to be a host site in 2026. He noted that the host cities could be announced before the start of the 2024 MLB season. Jose Altuve was injured during the WBC after being hit on the hand with a pitch. He missed 43 games due to a broken thumb.

The WBC held matches in two US cities and two foreign countries in 2023. Tokyo and Taichung hosted games worldwide, while Miami and Phoenix hosted in the United States. It’s unknown if doing something similar in ’26 will be decided upon.

MLB is considering holding the game in the Central Time Zone, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Additionally, he mentioned that they support baseball stadiums with retractable roofs. The two front-runners for hosting are the Texas Rangers and the Astros.

If they maintain their present roster, Houston will have an identical number of players competing in the WBC in ’26 as they did in ’23, with fourteen. Miami sold out 11 of the 15 games they played in ’23. Houston will benefit as a whole if it can achieve comparable success. This is the second big athletic event that the city plans to attend. Houston is one of the 16 locations for the World Cup in 2026.
