ESPN Insider: Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Could Be Fired After Playoffs

Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Could Be Fired After Playoffs: ESPN Insider.

Though it appears that head coach Mike McCarthy’s job security is in jeopardy, the Dallas Cowboys have a chance to win the NFC East on Sunday. Dallas, who has only won one playoffs game in the previous two years, is getting ready for its third playoff campaign under McCarthy.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Cowboys might not be committed to McCarthy in 2024. Although Schefter’s most recent report doesn’t explicitly state that McCarthy is coaching for his job, Dallas might fire McCarthy in the event that he experiences a significant playoff defeat.

On January 6, Schefter said, “People around the league, and even some within the Cowboys organization, continue to feel that coach Mike McCarthy will be measured by how Dallas’ final game goes.” McCarthy stands a great chance of retaining his position should the Cowboys perform well in the postseason. However, if they falter and conclude the campaign with a humiliating defeat, like they have done in the previous two seasons, then some believe Dallas may undergo change.

Under McCarthy, the Cowboys have struggled, going 1-2 in the postseason. The San Francisco 49ers, who defeated Dallas 42-10 earlier in the season and will be the NFC’s top seed this year, were the opponent in both of their losses.

Cowboys DC Dan Quinn In-Line for HC Job

Whether McCarthy succeeds in the postseason or not, the Cowboys might be getting ready to let defensive coordinator Dan Quinn go. Quinn is having a great season once again and might be prepared to take over as head coach.

The former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons might choose to remain in Dallas. But Schefter makes a suggestion that he might do so as head coach or coordinator.

“But there is a question about how long that will last and whether Dallas could coax him back for yet another season, which could factor into any decisions this team makes. The Cowboys do not want to lose Quinn, according to sources, and there are questions about what Dallas would be willing to do to keep him,” Schefter wrote.

Over the past three years, Dallas has become one of the NFL’s most explosive defenses under Quinn. Keeping him is arguably just as important as figuring out the head coaching role.

Dallas Playing for NFC East Against Commanders

On paper, the Cowboys’ visit to the Washington Commanders should be a shoe-in. Washington is 4-12 on the season and lost

45-10 to Dallas earlier in the season. But this is a similar situation to the end of the 2022 season, and that ended poorly for the Cowboys.

Dallas needed to defeat Washington on the road in order to have a chance at winning the NFC East at the end of the previous

season. They were defeated 26–6, well short of winning.

The Cowboys’ victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the next game helped them overcome their postseason hump.

Whatever way you slice it, losing to a weak division foe at the close of the season is cruel.

The game is considerably more important this year. In the event that Dallas triumphs, they will host a playoff game and might

avoid the 49ers until the NFC Championship. If they lose, they will be in a considerably more dejected mood going into the postseason.
