New Orleans Saints expected to make surprising decision on Derek Carr, Dennis Allen and offensive coordinator in 2024

With one of the weakest schedules in football going into the 2023 season, many people thought the New Orleans Saints would win ten games and take first place in the NFC South. As a dismal season comes to an end, it seems like Dennis Allen and Derek Carr’s destiny has been set.

After Sean Payton retired from the Saints after the 2021 season, 51-year-old Allen was elevated from defensive coordinator (2015–2021) to head coach. Allen’s familiarity with the franchise and his defensive coaching skills helped him earn the position, as New Orleans sought someone with his coaching expertise at the helm.

After going 7-10 in 2022, missing the playoffs and finishing third in the NFC South, New Orleans made a change. It parted ways with quarterback Andy Dalton, signing Carr to a lucrative contract to be the new face of the Saints’ offense.

Carr hasn’t lived up to expectations this year, though. It seems the team has decided on Allen and Carr’s futures, with New Orleans on the cusp of falling out of the playoff picture and fans becoming more and more irate with their lackluster performances.

Carr will return for his second season as the team’s starting quarterback in 2024, and Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports that the Saints want to keep Allen as their head coach.

It’s not a surprise that New Orleans is keeping Carr, considering what it would take to move him. When the Saints signed Carr, they included a no-trade clause in his contract and either releasing or trading him would leave a massive cap hit on the Saints’ books.

It appears that New Orleans isn’t ready to let go of Allen, even though he has one of the worst NFL coaching records after five seasons. For the 2024 campaign, there will apparently be one alteration to the Saints’ coaching staff.

According to Jones, there’s a notion that Pete Carmichael, the offensive coordinator for the Saints, may lose his job. After joining the organization in 2016 and taking over as play-caller for the Saints in 2022 following Payton’s departure, Carmichael appears to be the one who will take the fall for the team’s lackluster performance this season.
