Cowboys Could Bench $82.5 Million Starter After Worrying Performances.
The Dallas Cowboys are now hurting from two straight road defeats, and a big part of their problems has been their pass protection. Terence Steele’s dismal performances have played a significant role in Dallas’ 14 sack surrender in the last four games.
This previous offseason, Steele was given a five-year contract worth $82.5 million, but he has not performed up to the pay. Pro Football Focus has rated the experienced tackle at 50.3 through 15 games. Additionally, according to the website, his seven allowed sacks are tied for seventh most in the NFL.
Steele’s grade of less than fifty points was shared by three Cowboys players in the team’s Christmas Eve loss to the Miami Dolphins. Even if it’s not ideal to sit a highly compensated player, Dallas must stop allowing sacks at their present rate.
Tyron Smith’s left tackle position needed to be filled by Chuma Edoga versus Miami; but, if Smith’s health improves, Edoga might eventually replace Steele at right tackle. The Cowboys cannot afford to have the lineman give up sacks in the postseason, which is not to say they should try to sever ties with him.
Other Offensive Issues Plaguing Dallas
In addition to their terrible blocking, the Cowboys also appeared to ignore CeeDee Lamb, their most potent offensive weapon. Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott did not target the team’s top receiver for almost two quarters after the latter started off hot with a 49-yard touchdown score.
The former Oklahoma Sooner was obviously upset with his usage after the game. According to Sean Deveney of Heavy, Lamb described the circumstances as “weird.”
On December 24, Lamb told the journalists, “They wasn’t doing anything.” “I’m not sure. Simply put, I thought that if I was going to be active, I should stay involved. And follow the necessary steps in the game. However, I do agree. That second and third quarter was strange. Very strange.
Even still, Lamb’s stat line—six catches for 118 yards and a touchdown—was outstanding. With the stats he’s already accumulated, 2023 could be his greatest season to date. But if the Cowboys aren’t winning big games, it doesn’t really matter.
Cowboys’ Micah Parsons Aims at Refs After Dolphins Loss
The defending side of the ball is also displaying signs of discontent. Despite recording another half-sack against the Dolphins, pass rusher Michah Parsons was unable to have the desired effect on the outcome of the game.
According to The Athletic’s Jon Machota, Parsons complained about the battle and the refereeing
Parsons remarked, “The things that are called for and the positions that we get put in are mind-blowing.” All we need to do is learn how to overcome hardship. It’s the world we live in, and I realize a lot of it is bullshit. The star is affixed to our helmet. It is difficult to play defense.
The explosive Dolphins offense was limited to just one touchdown by Dallas. However, Miami managed to move the ball enough to score five field goals, Jason Sanders’ winning field goal being among them.
