According to sources who spoke to Football Insider, Aston Villa is considering a January loan agreement for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as they plan to recruit a superstar attacker for the upcoming campaign.

On Wednesday, December 20, Football Insider disclosed that Werner and Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho are targets for Villa in the upcoming transfer window.

Unai Emery is reportedly eager to bring in a player who can cover for Ollie Watkins and offer offensive assistance.

The Midlands giants may look to sign Werner on a loan during the winter transfer window, then chase a more high-profile signing when the 2023–24 season comes to a finish.

Football Insider has been informed by a reliable source that Villa’s management are preparing to recruit a “superstar striker” in the summer of 2024.

By then, it’s anticipated that worries about Financial Fair Play would have passed, enabling the team to spend big on the right player.

In his 14 Leipzig appearances this season, Werner has only managed two goals, and he has only started four of those games.

He previously played in the Premier League for Chelsea, notching 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 games for the Blues before leaving in 2022.

In June 2026, the Germany international’s contract with Leipzig expires.

Watkins has made 24 appearances in all competitions so in this 2023–24 season, tallying 14 goals and 8 assists.

This season, the England international has started every Premier League match; the only other forward available at Villa Park is Jhon Duran.

Only one point separates Emery’s team, which is now in third place in the Premier League, from leaders Arsenal.

In other news, the defender’s contract with Aston Villa may expire.
