Saints’ Dennis Allen explains why he decided to go for it on 4th down so many times vs. Rams

Dennis Allen, the coach of the New Orleans Saints, chose to attempt a fourth down three times on Thursday night.

against the Los Angeles Rams, and each time the offense tried, it failed.

In a 30-22 loss, there were several instances in the game where the Saints fell short of expectations, but the three fourth-down mistries will probably be the plays that fans speak about the most coming into the weekend.

Allen repeatedly discussed the choice to go for it on fourth down after the game.

“We came into this game wanting to be aggressive, and knowing the type of team we were playing, the offense we were playing.

Allen claimed trying to win this game with field goals was not the right strategy. Although we didn’t want to act carelessly, we thought that in both of those

scenarios in which we enjoyed plays. Sadly, it was not successful. There was an aggressive mentality present.”

In the first half, the Saints had two unsuccessful fourth down attempts; the second one turned out to be significant.

With 1:04 remaining in the first half and the Rams ahead 10-7, the Saints went for it on a 4th and 5 at the Rams’ 42.

Carr was under pressure on the play, and he missed the target completely with his pass to tight end Jujuan Johnson.

In response, the Rams went 58 yards in five plays to score and increase their advantage to 17–7 at the half.

“It was obviously momentum changer in the game,” Allen stated. “At the conclusion of the second quarter, I decided to pursue

that. I desired to be assertive. They had three timeouts, of course. Thus, ideally, if you punt the ball away and give it to them

supported by backup. But their pocket still contains three times. Once more, the goal of this game was not to avoid being defeated. Our goal was to triumph.”
