Jeff Stelling says Aston Villa have made one of the best signings ever
To put it mildly, Aston Villa’s transfer policy during their initial Premier League promotion was questionable.
The Villans nearly lost their first summer under Dean Smith, spending over £100 million, and many of the new players that came in had to be written off as busts.
That timeframe, though, is but a blip in Villa Park’s incredible history of recruiting.
Though recent additions like Lucas Digne, Emi Martinez, and Moussa Diaby have been fantastic players, John McGinn was maybe the best value in this team.
Indeed, the Scot signed for Villa for just £2.7m back in 2018, and now, he’s one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
Speaking on The Game Football Podcast, Jeff Stelling has been discussing the signing of McGinn all those years ago, and he says that this may have been one of the all-time bargains.
McGinn an all-time Bargain
Stelling expressed his opinion about the midfield player.
“People like Ollie Watkins, who has progressed tremendously this season despite his advanced age, and Ezri Konsa, who is having one of his best seasons ever, are just a few examples. Stelling stated,
“He cost £2.7 million or so. When you consider what teams are getting these days for £80 million, it’s one of the best deals ever.”
Up there with the best
Stelling is correct when he says that this acquisition is among the greatest in football history.
In addition to having a significant role in Villa’s initial promotion, McGinn has advanced in the Premier League every season and is now a serious contender to lead the team to a Premier League championship.
In English football history, there have been some amazing deals, but McGinn has to rank among the greatest.
It’s highly praised that the Scot might be the best signing in Villa’s history.
