Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Addresses Dak Prescott Contract Talks
The Cowboys have positioned themselves as a contender to go far in the postseason once more.
Quarterback Dak Prescott, who is firmly in the MVP debate, has played a major role in the team’s success.
Prescott is in a strong position to negotiate a new contract because to his play.
It has always been anticipated that discussions on that front would be postponed until the summer. After playing his way into a hefty new contract this season, the two-time Pro Bowler and the Cowboys have not had any talks, according to a story from last month.
There is one year left on Prescott’s contract, but an extension is required due to his unaffordable $59.5MM 2024 cap hit.
Owner Jerry Jones discussed the topic of a Prescott trade during his weekly visit on 105.3 The Fan.
In addition to securing his long-term contract, the team’s first priority will be to work one out for him because players like wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and edge rusher Michah Parsons are also eligible for contract extensions.
Jones’ comments give off a positive vibe regarding the likelihood of an agreement being struck soon.
According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Jones stated, “Don’t pay any attention to discussion.”It has no significance. What I determine, what our team decides, and what Dak chooses are the only things that are factual in this situation.
We are aware of our precise position within the contract, the remaining number of years, and how near we should and have been to that level of communication.
The timing of a contract, according to Jones, “remains to be seen,” although the first part of the new league year in March seems like a reasonable timetable. It wouldn’t be shocking if an agreement were struck by the fifth day of the 2024 league season, as Prescott is owed a $5MM roster bonus.
Although the 30-year-old has produced significant leverage this season, a second Cowboys deal will demand a hefty financial investment.
Throughout the 2023 offseason, there was another surge in the quarterback market. In terms of average annual value (AAV), four young passers—Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert, and Joe Burrow—surpassed one another to become the highest-paid players in the league. After that, Patrick Mahomes negotiated a change to his Chiefs contract that
elevated him to a higher position in the hierarchy, where four players now make at least $51 million annually.
Prescott’s present deal, worth $160 million over four years, has been surpassed multiple times, as the annual pay ceiling keeps rising. The annual remuneration under his new contract will undoubtedly increase, but Jones’ public attitude suggests a more cordial bargaining process than when the parties were in this position previously.
