Arsenal could sign a £53m “special talent” instead of Douglas Luiz
Arsenal might be a better fit for the youthful Spaniard.
Arsenal is once again in the thick of a fierce Premier League title fight, despite a slower start to the season than they had the year before.
Mikel Arteta’s team led the standings going into the weekend, but they dropped a point behind Liverpool after a hard 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday. Despite this, they still have a three-point advantage over Manchester City in fourth place.
But with the Champions League knockout stages approaching and a fierce league race ahead of them, the Gunners will need to make wise additions during the transfer window. Although a move for long-term target Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa may not happen, the team has been linked to exciting alternative Martin Zubimendi.
Arsenal transfer news – Martin Zubimendi
Because of Thomas Partey’s persistent injury issues and their desire to play for Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations in January, the Mirror reports that Arsenal is interested in signing a new midfield player during the January transfer window.
Luiz of Villa has been one of the names most frequently associated with the Gunners over the past year or so, but a transfer there appears improbable as the Mirror adds that it would take a “mega, mega-money” deal to get the Claret and Blue into selling their star player.
But the article does highlight another, more grounded player who has the attention of the people in north London: Zubimendi of Real Sociedad.
Though his £53 million release clause will probably still give the FFP-wary Arsenal board some headaches, the Spaniard has made a major impression for the Basque team, earning the nickname “special talent” from U23 scout Antonio Mango. This transfer is also much more feasible than Luiz, if not a better one.
